my ascent into adulthood
First tattoo, done last July, when I was living in New York. It had been a really tough, but ultimately transformative summer, and I decided to finally get the tattoo I’d been dreaming of for years. The semi-colon was added because it’s my favorite punctuation mark, and it “symbolizes the metaphorical ability to stop, but the choice to continue,” even though Vonnegut regarded them as “transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing.” That’s the only thing I’ve ever disagreed with him on.
I got this tattoo in the summer, before my sophomore year of college, as a kind of “you can do it” anthem. I wanted to be reassured every time I felt like I was faltering, and I am. It is the last two lines of William Ernest Henley’s poem, “Invictus”.
